WHY study Kiswahili?

Picture
Tutasoma!!  (We will learn!!)
Kiswahili is a language of solidarity.  As stated in Elder Haki Madhubuti's From Plan to Planet, Kiswahili is non- tribal, used as a first language in Tanzania and other areas of East Afrika.  It is the language used in Kwanzaa (Swahili for first fruit).
Kiswahili is a Bantu language spoken by about 35 million people in Tanzania, Burundi, Congo (Kinshasa) Kenya, Mayotte, Mozambique, Oman, Rwanda, Somalia, South Africa, Uganda, UAE and the USA. Swahili is an official language of Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya and is used as a lingua franca throughout East Africa. (More here)

Safari za Tanzania na Kenya!   We are traveling to East Africa in February of 2019 to immerse ourselves in the rich culture and traditions.
  • We will connect our 4th grade classes in N.E. Ohio to those of similar age an grade at schools in East Africa.
  • We learn through observation the concept of Ujamaa, a concept solidified by ancestor Mwalimu Julius Nyere.
  • We will take a safari to observe the natural habitat of some of the most phenomenal animals on the planet.
  • We will volunteer at public and/or university library to gain first hand experience at working with others in the region.
  • We wil strive to learn the language
